A Texas Man Uses an Electric Bike to Help Flood Victims

A man from Texas, known locally as the “Bicycle hero,” is making a big difference in his community after it was cut off by recent floods. Evan Wayne is working with volunteers to deliver essential supplies to residents in need.

When Sandy Creek flooded in Texas, it blocked the only road to a community. People were unable to get supplies like food, water, and medicine. While cars couldn’t pass through, volunteers found they could travel on foot or by using electric bikes. Evan Wayne used an electric bike to carry a lot of supplies, making many trips into the community.

“This was a dog trailer 48 hours ago. I had a hacksaw, hacked the top off, grabbed some bungee cords, and here we are,” Evan explained in an interview with CBS Austin. He has made around 100 round trips each day in the first two days, delivering food, water, and critical supplies. He’s also working on getting chainsaws for volunteers who are using hand tools to clear debris.

Besides delivering supplies, Evan has also helped people communicate. He’s been a point person for connecting emergency medical services with cell phone service because people often have no signal.

Evan emphasizes that he’s not the only one helping. Many people are carrying supplies, walking, and doing what they can. However, his ability to transport more goods at higher speeds has been crucial in helping many people.

“This is all volunteers here. They’re just taking it upon themselves to get people where they need to go. I think there’s an umbrella company coming in, taking over tomorrow, but until they get here, people are just taking care of people, which is what you’ve got to do.”

E-bikes Proving Their Worth in Emergencies

Electric bicycles are becoming increasingly useful as a way to get around after natural disasters.

Their small and efficient batteries allow for numerous rescue trips, like the ones Evan is making. Recharging is easy with a solar panel when power is out. Also, if gas stations are closed or have no fuel, e-bikes can continue to run while gasoline-powered vehicles run out of gas.

Electric bicycle batteries can also be used to charge phones, helping people stay in contact with family and emergency services after hurricanes and other disasters.

While most people don’t need them for emergencies, electric bikes have shown their value in many disaster situations, offering benefits beyond just transportation and recreation.

I'm Rohan Mehta, the voice behind KhelRe—a trusted and steadily growing blog dedicated to electric vehicles (EVs) in India. With over five years of experience as a tech and automotive blogger, I turned my frustrations with owning an EV into a mission: to help others make more intelligent choices in this fast-evolving world of electric mobility. I've been an early adopter of EV technology—I repurchased my first electric scooter in 2019. That experience opened my eyes to both the promises and the pitfalls of this new mode of transport. From slow charging times and range anxiety to misleading specs and hidden costs, I've faced it all. But instead of walking away, I decided to write about it. That's how KhelRe was born—a no-nonsense, hands-on blog where I share practical, real-world reviews of EV cars, bikes, and scooters. I break down features, range, performance, and pricing from a user-first perspective. I take pride in simplifying complex tech into clear, valuable insights—offering tips, ownership stories, and advice you won't find in flashy press releases or sales brochures. Whether you're a first-time EV buyer or just a curious auto enthusiast, my goal is to help you navigate the EV landscape with confidence. My motto: "EV knowledge should come from experience, not just brochures." When I'm not test-driving the latest e-scooter or comparing charging networks, you'll probably find me tinkering with my garage EV setup, chatting with fellow enthusiasts online, or sipping chai while writing my next blog post from a cosy local café.
