An Affordable Chinese EV with Solid-State Batteries
This Chinese automaker is planning to release the first mass-market electric vehicle sold worldwide using new semi-solid state batteries.

The new MG4 is set to be unveiled next month and will feature cutting-edge battery technology. MG’s brand manager, Chen Cui, announced that the new battery, made by QinTao Energy, contains only 5% electrolyte.
According to MG, the semi-solid-state EV battery can travel up to 537 km (334 miles) on a single charge with an energy density of 180 Wh/kg. It also performs better than LFP batteries in cold weather (–7°C) by 13.8%.
Chen explained that the new MG4 will be priced competitively. While he didn’t give exact figures, he hinted at a price around 80,000 yuan ($11,000) to 120,000 yuan ($16,500), saying customers would find the MG4 a good choice.
MG states that the new MG4 will use a 70 kWh battery pack. It will be available with a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) option producing 161 horsepower (120 kW).

BYD’s popular Dolphin electric hatchback is available with two LFP Blade Battery options: 44.9 kWh and 60.48 kWh, providing 420 km (261 miles) and 520 km (323 miles) of driving range, respectively.
The new MG4 is slightly larger than the Dolphin, with a length of 4,395 mm, a width of 1,842 mm, and a wheelbase of 2,750 mm. The BYD Dolphin is 4,280 mm long, 1,770 mm wide, and has a wheelbase of 2,700 mm.
MG’s new EV will also include its new smart cockpit system (MG x Oppo), developed together with the Chinese electronics company Oppo.
On July 14th, the first MG4 model was produced at SAIC’s Nanjing plant, with the official launch scheduled for August 5th.
Electrek’s Take
The new MG4 has the potential to significantly impact the Chinese and international electric vehicle markets by offering long driving ranges and advanced technology at an affordable price.
As the price competition in China’s EV market intensifies, mainly driven by BYD, automakers are looking to overseas markets for growth this year.
MG is already a top-selling Chinese auto brand globally, ranking first in retail sales in China with over 2 million vehicles sold in the first six months of 2025.
The new MG4, powered by semi-solid-state batteries, represents MG’s latest step in its new energy strategy. This development comes as many automakers and companies are actively working on new battery technologies aimed at increasing energy density, range, and overall performance.
Companies like BYD, CATL, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Stellantis, Toyota, Nissan, Honda, and many others are all pursuing the goal of developing the next generation of EV batteries.

I’m Rohan Mehta, the voice behind KhelRe—a trusted and steadily growing blog dedicated to electric vehicles (EVs) in India. With over five years of experience as a tech and automotive blogger, I turned my frustrations with owning an EV into a mission: to help others make more intelligent choices in this fast-evolving world of electric mobility.
I’ve been an early adopter of EV technology—I repurchased my first electric scooter in 2019. That experience opened my eyes to both the promises and the pitfalls of this new mode of transport. From slow charging times and range anxiety to misleading specs and hidden costs, I’ve faced it all. But instead of walking away, I decided to write about it.
That’s how KhelRe was born—a no-nonsense, hands-on blog where I share practical, real-world reviews of EV cars, bikes, and scooters. I break down features, range, performance, and pricing from a user-first perspective. I take pride in simplifying complex tech into clear, valuable insights—offering tips, ownership stories, and advice you won’t find in flashy press releases or sales brochures.
Whether you’re a first-time EV buyer or just a curious auto enthusiast, my goal is to help you navigate the EV landscape with confidence. My motto: “EV knowledge should come from experience, not just brochures.”
When I’m not test-driving the latest e-scooter or comparing charging networks, you’ll probably find me tinkering with my garage EV setup, chatting with fellow enthusiasts online, or sipping chai while writing my next blog post from a cosy local café.
