Cadillac and Lyriq Sales: A Bright Spot for EVs

A significant majority of buyers for Cadillac’s Lyriq and Optiq have come from other car brands. Specifically, 75% of Lyriq buyers and 80% of Optiq buyers were previously owners of different vehicles. In the first half of 2025, Cadillac sold 9,317 Lyriqs and 4,940 Optiqs.

General Motors (GM) acknowledges that its electric vehicles (EVs) are currently not selling as much as they could in certain coastal markets. The company is exploring different strategies, including potentially shifting manufacturing to produce more gasoline-powered vehicles.

However, GM believes there’s a substantial opportunity for growth in these coastal areas. The success of the Lyriq and Optiq suggests that Cadillac’s pricing strategy is competitive. Both cars qualify for the full EV tax credit, and their lease deals are also attractive compared to other luxury EVs of similar quality.

Interestingly, the decline in Tesla’s market share has coincided with a similar trend in GM’s overall EV sales. This indicates that Cadillac’s EVs might be attracting customers who were previously considering Tesla vehicles.

Key Points:

  • High Conquest Rate: The Lyriq and Optiq have a high percentage of buyers who were previously driving other brands.
  • Strong Sales Numbers: Cadillac sold a substantial number of Lyriqs and Optiqs in the first half of 2025.
  • Market Growth Potential: GM sees significant growth opportunities for its EVs in coastal markets.
  • Competitive Pricing: Cadillac’s EVs offer competitive pricing, including tax credits and attractive lease deals.
  • Possible Tesla Shift: The success of Cadillac’s EVs might be partly due to consumers moving from Tesla.

GM’s EV Strategy:

GM is facing challenges in selling its EVs. To address this, the company is reevaluating its manufacturing plans and considering prioritizing gasoline-powered vehicles in some cases. This is part of a broader strategy to better capture demand in key markets.

Market Outlook:

Experts believe that the market for EVs is still developing, and GM has a significant chance to increase its EV sales. The Lyriq and Optiq are demonstrating that Cadillac is a strong contender in the luxury EV space.

I'm Rohan Mehta, the voice behind KhelRe—a trusted and steadily growing blog dedicated to electric vehicles (EVs) in India. With over five years of experience as a tech and automotive blogger, I turned my frustrations with owning an EV into a mission: to help others make more intelligent choices in this fast-evolving world of electric mobility. I've been an early adopter of EV technology—I repurchased my first electric scooter in 2019. That experience opened my eyes to both the promises and the pitfalls of this new mode of transport. From slow charging times and range anxiety to misleading specs and hidden costs, I've faced it all. But instead of walking away, I decided to write about it. That's how KhelRe was born—a no-nonsense, hands-on blog where I share practical, real-world reviews of EV cars, bikes, and scooters. I break down features, range, performance, and pricing from a user-first perspective. I take pride in simplifying complex tech into clear, valuable insights—offering tips, ownership stories, and advice you won't find in flashy press releases or sales brochures. Whether you're a first-time EV buyer or just a curious auto enthusiast, my goal is to help you navigate the EV landscape with confidence. My motto: "EV knowledge should come from experience, not just brochures." When I'm not test-driving the latest e-scooter or comparing charging networks, you'll probably find me tinkering with my garage EV setup, chatting with fellow enthusiasts online, or sipping chai while writing my next blog post from a cosy local café.
