What’s Happening with Electric Vehicles in America So Far This Year?
It’s a complicated picture when it comes to electric vehicles (EVs) in the United States this year. Sales are up in the first half, but the recent numbers aren’t very encouraging. Companies like General Motors are doing very well, while Tesla is predictably thriving. Overall, it’s a mixed performance. The future of EVs isn’t in jeopardy under President Trump, but getting Americans to adopt them isn’t easy. While the EV market has generally grown, there are clear winners and losers emerging in 2025.
Let’s look at how EV sales have been in the first half of 2019 and what the future might hold.
What EV Sales Are Like in 2019
The beginning of the year saw a strong start for EV sales. According to Cox Automotive, sales grew by more than 10% year-over-year in the first quarter. From January to June, EV sales increased by 1.5% to roughly 607,000 vehicles, setting a new first-half record.
However, the situation isn’t as positive in the second quarter. Cox Automotive reports that U.S. EV sales dropped by over 6% in June, reaching just over 310,000 vehicles from an estimated 332,000. This was only the third year-over-year decline recorded.
Several factors are contributing to these sales trends. Stephanie Valdez Streaty, director of industry insights at Cox Automotive, points out that there’s a lot of consumer hesitation about EVs, partly due to the Trump administration’s policies on climate change.
Furthermore, with several EV tax credits set to expire after September 30th, Streaty anticipates a surge in demand in the third quarter, which might be followed by a decline in the fourth quarter. Cox Automotive estimates that EV sales in the U.S. will be flat for the whole year, accounting for about 8.5% of the total car market.
The key to future growth, according to Streaty, is the availability of more affordable EV options that have comparable pricing to gasoline-powered cars. “We need vehicles that are affordable that have that price parity with their ICE counterpart,” she said. Once more such options become available, she believes that will be the deciding factor.

I’m Rohan Mehta, the voice behind KhelRe—a trusted and steadily growing blog dedicated to electric vehicles (EVs) in India. With over five years of experience as a tech and automotive blogger, I turned my frustrations with owning an EV into a mission: to help others make more intelligent choices in this fast-evolving world of electric mobility.
I’ve been an early adopter of EV technology—I repurchased my first electric scooter in 2019. That experience opened my eyes to both the promises and the pitfalls of this new mode of transport. From slow charging times and range anxiety to misleading specs and hidden costs, I’ve faced it all. But instead of walking away, I decided to write about it.
That’s how KhelRe was born—a no-nonsense, hands-on blog where I share practical, real-world reviews of EV cars, bikes, and scooters. I break down features, range, performance, and pricing from a user-first perspective. I take pride in simplifying complex tech into clear, valuable insights—offering tips, ownership stories, and advice you won’t find in flashy press releases or sales brochures.
Whether you’re a first-time EV buyer or just a curious auto enthusiast, my goal is to help you navigate the EV landscape with confidence. My motto: “EV knowledge should come from experience, not just brochures.”
When I’m not test-driving the latest e-scooter or comparing charging networks, you’ll probably find me tinkering with my garage EV setup, chatting with fellow enthusiasts online, or sipping chai while writing my next blog post from a cosy local café.
