Enbridge is investing in solar power in Texas, and Meta is buying the solar energy it produces.
Last month, Electrek reported that the Canadian oil and gas company Enbridge started its first solar farm in Texas. Now, they have approved Clear Fork, a 600 megawatt (MW) solar farm that is already being built near San Antonio. This project is expected to begin generating electricity in the summer of 2027.
Once Clear Fork is operational, all of its electricity will be purchased by Meta Platforms under a long-term agreement. Meta will use this solar power to power its data centers, which require a lot of energy, with clean energy.
The cost of the solar farm project is approximately $900 million. Enbridge anticipates that Clear Fork will increase the company’s cash flow and profits starting in 2027.
Enbridge’s Executive Vice President, Matthew Akman, stated that this project shows growing demand for renewable energy in North America from major tech and data center companies.
Meta’s head of global energy, Urvi Parekh, said that the company is excited to partner with Enbridge to bring new renewable energy to Texas and support its operations with 100% clean energy.
Meta’s first large data center, Prometheus, is scheduled to open in 2026.
