I really think the peak for hybrids was in 2003 with the second-generation Prius. This car, with its unique triangular shape, a robust eCVT, and a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated engine, was perfect. It wasn’t fast or stylish, but it was incredibly reliable. That’s why you can easily find them with over 300,000 miles and minimal maintenance – it’s just a really good car. I even owned one.
So, when Hyundai started making its own hybrids, I was still doubtful. These cars use turbocharged, direct-injected engines that send power through a traditional planetary-gearset transmission, similar to a regular internal combustion engine. To me, this seemed like a complicated solution compared to what we usually see from Toyota or Honda. I was certain these cars wouldn’t perform as well on the road as a Toyota, right?
Well, I’ve been proven wrong. I spent a week driving the Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid and found it to be really impressive, especially when it comes to electric driving. It’s so good at electric driving that I started wondering why Hyundai doesn’t just go fully electric instead. This car truly wants to be an EV.
