Elon Musk Says Unsupervised Self-Driving to Be Available by End of 2025
Tesla CEO Elon Musk is “confident” that his advanced driver-assistance system, Unsupervised Full Self-Driving (FSD), will be available “by the end of this year.” This isn’t the first time Musk has promised Tesla owners autonomous driving capabilities, but it’s important to remember that not everyone will have access to this feature.
What is Unsupervised FSD?
Essentially, Unsupervised FSD represents a significant step forward in self-driving technology. It would allow Tesla vehicles to navigate without constant driver supervision, meaning the car would be able to handle driving tasks on its own.
Currently, Tesla vehicles have Level 2 driver-assistance systems, where the driver is responsible for staying attentive and ready to take control. Unsupervised FSD would move to Level 3 automation, where the car and the company would share responsibility for safe operation.
Musk’s Statements on the Timeline
Musk has repeatedly stated his optimism about the rollout of Unsupervised FSD. In a recent earnings call, he said, “We’re certainly getting there. I think it will be available for unsupervised personal use by the end of this year in certain geographies. We’re just being very careful about it. We’re just being extremely paranoid, but I’m confident that by the end of this year, within a number of cities in the U.S., it will be available to end users.”
He had previously expressed a similar timeframe during a Q2 earnings call last year, stating he would be “shocked if we cannot do it next year. Next year seems highly probable to me.”
Limitations and Current Status
While the end of this year is the target, Unsupervised FSD won’t be available nationwide or on all types of roads. Initially, the feature will be rolled out to a limited number of cities in the U.S.
Tesla has already launched its Robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, with safety drivers, using standard Model Y vehicles in a specific area. This is a preview of the kind of operation that might be possible with Unsupervised FSD.
History of Promises
Musk has made similar promises about full self-driving in the past, and they haven’t all been met yet. However, he remains confident that Unsupervised FSD will eventually become a reality for Tesla owners.

I’m Rohan Mehta, the voice behind KhelRe—a trusted and steadily growing blog dedicated to electric vehicles (EVs) in India. With over five years of experience as a tech and automotive blogger, I turned my frustrations with owning an EV into a mission: to help others make more intelligent choices in this fast-evolving world of electric mobility.
I’ve been an early adopter of EV technology—I repurchased my first electric scooter in 2019. That experience opened my eyes to both the promises and the pitfalls of this new mode of transport. From slow charging times and range anxiety to misleading specs and hidden costs, I’ve faced it all. But instead of walking away, I decided to write about it.
That’s how KhelRe was born—a no-nonsense, hands-on blog where I share practical, real-world reviews of EV cars, bikes, and scooters. I break down features, range, performance, and pricing from a user-first perspective. I take pride in simplifying complex tech into clear, valuable insights—offering tips, ownership stories, and advice you won’t find in flashy press releases or sales brochures.
Whether you’re a first-time EV buyer or just a curious auto enthusiast, my goal is to help you navigate the EV landscape with confidence. My motto: “EV knowledge should come from experience, not just brochures.”
When I’m not test-driving the latest e-scooter or comparing charging networks, you’ll probably find me tinkering with my garage EV setup, chatting with fellow enthusiasts online, or sipping chai while writing my next blog post from a cosy local café.
